변남석 작가는 ‘밸런싱 아티스트(Balancing Artist)’, 우리말로 ‘중심잡기 예술가’로 세계적인 명성을 얻고 있습니다. 돌멩이와 유리병 같은 작은 물체부터 자전거와 오토바이, 냉장고와 세탁기에 이르기까지, 크기와 종류를 가리지 않고 모서리나 귀퉁이로 세워 무게중심을 잡아내는 조형 예술의 일인자입니다.Byun Nam-seok has earned international recognition as a balancing artist. From small objects such as stones and glass bottles to bicycles, motorcycles, refrigerators, and washing machines, he stands objects of any size or kind on an edge or a corner, finding the exact point where they hold.

돌 하나에서 시작된 길It began with a single stone

체육을 전공한 만능 스포츠맨이었던 그는 실내 스키장 사업을 하던 중 실패와 개인적인 아픔으로 힘든 시기를 보냅니다. 2003년, 춘천 등선폭포에서 우연히 돌을 세운 것이 예술의 길로 들어선 계기가 되었습니다.A gifted all-round athlete who had studied physical education, he was running an indoor ski business when business failure and personal loss brought him to a difficult period. In 2003, at Deungseon Falls in Chuncheon, he happened to stand a stone on its end — and that moment set him on the path of art.
